Midvaal educator nominated for national award

Adele Modoo of the Känguru Institute for the Disabled has been nominated for the 2026 Woman of Stature Awards, recognising her commitment to inclusive education in Sedibeng.

MIDVAAL – When Adele Modoo speaks about children, she does not frame them in terms of limitations, but of possibilities.

It is this philosophy that has earned the pedagogical leader of the Känguru Institute for the Disabled a nomination at the 2026 Woman of Stature Awards, in the category Education and Training.

The nomination places Modoo in rare company. She is the only nominee from Midvaal, and the sole representative from the entire Sedibeng District in her category — a milestone that reflects both personal dedication and the growing recognition of inclusive education in local communities.

With more than 17 years of experience in early childhood development and special needs education, Modoo has built her career around ensuring that children with disabilities are not sidelined, but supported, challenged and celebrated.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development, a BA in Psychology, and several specialised qualifications in inclusive and remedial education.

At the Känguru Institute, Modoo plays a central role in shaping learning programmes that are adapted to the individual needs of each child.

Colleagues describe her leadership style as firm but compassionate, with a strong emphasis on dignity, independence, and collaboration with families.

“For many of our learners, progress does not happen in leaps, but in small, meaningful steps,” Modoo said. “Recognising and celebrating those steps is just as important as reaching milestones.”

The Woman of Stature Awards aim to honour women who make a measurable difference in their fields while uplifting others along the way.

For Modoo, the nomination is less about personal acclaim and more about shining a spotlight on the importance of inclusive education in South Africa.

“Children with disabilities deserve the same opportunities to learn, grow, and belong,” she said.

“If this nomination helps bring that message to a wider audience, then it has already achieved something valuable.”

The 2026 Woman of Stature Awards ceremony will take place on April 11 at 11:00 at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways, Gauteng.

Adele is also in the running for the Public’s Choice Award, where members of the public can vote for their favourite nominee.

Supporters can cast their votes through the Woman of Stature Awards website once voting opens — a chance to help shine an even brighter spotlight on her work in inclusive education.
