Pirates one step away from glory as Cardoso faces the axe!

The current situation has led some to wonder if there is more to the scheduling than meets the eye.

The Betway Premiership title race is reaching a boiling point, and while many believe the trophy is headed to Orlando, the old saying still rings true: it isn’t over until the fat lady sings.

Pirates have one hand on the trophy!

Orlando Pirates currently have one hand on the trophy with just two games left to play. For their rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, a shock 3-2 defeat to TS Galaxy felt like the final nail in the coffin for their title hopes.

Cardoso on thin ice

The defeat has left Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso in a desperate position. Described as a “dead man walking,” Cardoso’s future at the club appears to hinge entirely on the upcoming CAF Champions League final. Unless he can secure the win, he may find himself out of a job. With the league title slipping away, he has no one to save him but himself.

Zakes’ Sports Corner notes that it would take a miracle for Pirates to lose both of their remaining matches, but anything can still happen.

Will history repeat itself?

Those with long memories can recall how Sundowns snatched the trophy from Kaizer Chiefs in the last game of the last season. To many, it was done and dusted, but Sundowns won it from nowhere.

The question is, ‘Will history repeat itself?’

Maybe there is something that PSL doesn’t tell us

There is a growing sense of confusion with Zakes’ Sports Corner regarding the league’s closing stages. Curiously, Sundowns have already completed all their fixtures, while Pirates still have two games to play.

Zakes’ Sports Corner stands to be corrected; usually, when the title race is this close, the PSL schedules deciding matches to take place at the same time to ensure fairness.

The current situation has led some to wonder if there is more to the scheduling than meets the eye.

The final stretch

Maybe there is something that PSL is not telling us!

But as things stand, the 2025/2026 season looks set to crown Orlando Pirates as the new champions. The club’s die-hard supporters have already started to celebrate. If Pirates don’t end the ‘The Brazilians’ Buccaneers’ dominance, they would have only themselves to blame. The league title is within their reach.

As for Cardoso, he is like a dead man walking!
