SEDIBENG.- Violence erupted during ABC Motsepe League pre-season matches at Jet Nteo Primary School in Boipatong last weekend, leaving a Young Pirates FC goalkeeper hospitalised after being punched in the face.

An official said that the altercation broke out after a player kicked the goalkeeper, triggering a fistfight between them.

The fixture between Boipatong FC and Young Pirates FC turned into chaos toward the end of the match when an initial foul escalated into an exchange of punches between rival players.

The chaotic situation forced organisers to call the police to the scene.

The pre-season games, which also involved a team from the North West, were hosted at the Jet Nteo grounds because Boipatong Stadium is currently undergoing construction ahead of the new season.

Boipatong FC Director, Gab Maloka, confirmed the incident to Sedibeng Ster Sport, describing the violence as unfortunate and completely avoidable.

While noting that the blame no longer matters, Maloka said that Boipatong FC rushed the injured goalkeeper to a local private hospital, paid all medical expenses, and ensured he was discharged the same day after receiving facial stitches.

Boipatong FC subsequently issued an official apology letter to Young Pirates FC. The letter, seen by Sedibeng Ster Sport, expresses sincere regret and a commitment to promoting good sportsmanship, discipline, and fair play.

The club confirmed it is taking full accountability for its players’ behaviour and will address the matter through internal disciplinary procedures to prevent future occurrences.

Although the brawl also trended widely on social media, Maloka strongly condemned the violence, stating that football has no room for such behaviour.

“Football doesn’t need this, and as Boipatong FC we want to categorically state that we are disappointed with what transpired on the day,” said Maloka

Both Boipatong FC and Young Pirates FC are set to represent the Vaal in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League when the new season begins.

Fortunately, they have been placed in separate streams, A and B, meaning they will not face each other directly during the regular league campaign.
