VEREENIGING. – “It is imperative that we prevent any disruptions, road blockages, or protests that could interfere with examinations or prevent our learners from safely accessing their examination centres.”
This was a stern warning issued by Sedibeng District Municipality’s (SDM) Executive Mayor, Lerato Maloka, recently, when wishing the Matric Class of 2026 success in their final examinations, which began on October 14.
Maloka said the moment marks the culmination of a basic education journey that began in January 2015, making them the distinguished 19th cohort to sit for these exams.

“You are part of a monumental movement of youth charting their futures.”
Nationally, the Class of 2026 joins a record-breaking 962 832 registered candidates, making it the largest full-time cohort to sit for the NSC examinations to date. In the province, learners are among 203 794 candidates—comprising 152 527 full-time and 51 267 part-time learners—who will be writing across 1 065 examination centres.
Now is the time to showcase the knowledge and skills you have acquired.
Maloka further acknowledged the dedication of the learners, noting, “Each Grade 12 learner has worked hard, demonstrated resilience, and carried the hopes of their families and communities. Now is the time to showcase the knowledge and skills you have acquired.”
Stay calm, focus, be confident!
She urged learners to stay calm, focused, and confident during this critical period, reminding them to prioritise their well-being by resting adequately, eating well, and managing their time effectively.
Furthermore, the executive mayor made a direct appeal to all community organisations and residents across the district to act in the best interests of the learners during the examination period.
