Ex-Bafana captain takes charge of local football club

The Aaron Mokoena Academy's next SAFA Sedibeng Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League match will be away to 016 Magista FC on November 7.

SEDIBENG.- Ex-Bafana Bafana captain Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena is the latest former professional player to own a football club.

Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that Mokoena has bought the SAFA Sedibeng Men’s Hollywoodbets Regional League status from Moponisi United FC from Vanderbijlpark. United was one of the teams that challenged for the SAFA Sedibeng Regional League title last season.

Philip Ndlovu, the previous owner, confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that Mokoena is now the new owner of the club.

The two come a long way.

Ndlovu bought the club from Mmabatho FC, which was based at the NWU Vaal Campus for training and playing purposes.

Ndlovu told Sedibeng Ster Sport that Mokoena is now the majority shareholder.

The two gentlemen have come a long way since their days at the now defunct The Birds FC.

“It is true that Aaron Mokoena is now the owner of the club and the name of the club has since changed from Moponisi United to Aaron Mokoena Academy. Even if you look under SAFA Sedibeng Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League’s fixtures, the name has changed,” said Ndlovu.

The club will still use Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark’s sports fields for training and play their SAFA Sedibeng Regional League home games.

Interestingly, the Aaron Mokoena Academy started its SAFA Sedibeng Men’s Regional League season with a massive win.

The Aaron Mokoena Academy made their intentions clear by beating Early Birds FC 8-0 in the SAFA Sedibeng Regional League’s Stream A match over the weekend.

They are the current log leaders in this stream, with Perfect Academy second.

Mokoena started his football career playing at Boipatong Real Rangers FC. His rise to stardom came when his talent was spotted by Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono, who signed him for the club. From the dusty soccer ground of Boipatong, he became a household name. Mokoena went to make a name for himself playing abroad. He was Bafana Bafana captain when South Africa hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, the Aaron Mokoena Academy’s next SAFA Sedibeng Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League match will be away to 016 Magista FC on November 7.
