BOPHELONG.- “A mother is a caretaker, a friend, a nurturer, a doctor and disciplinarian,” says a North West Student, Naledi Thapeli. You don’t have to give birth to a child to show him or her the love of a mother. This has been evident of the women (caretakers) at Bophelong Children’s home (BCH), founded by Emily Mohlala. “This home began as a day care centre by Mohlala, a woman with a soft spot for children. Later she realised that some children were neglected by their parents and that some did not even have a home to go to,” Thapeli said.
With the help of eight permanent staff and volunteers Mohlala has managed to take care of and show love to BCH’s children as she would her own. The eight staff members including Mohlala were surprised by Thapeli and her entourage, Spik Mahlope, Lesimola Selepe, Cornea Loots, and Nkaiseng Plaatjie who were going to look after the children for a day while they went out for a treat at Emerald Casino and Resort. “I’m overwhelmed by these children! They did not just make my day, they made my year! I love them! May God grant them many more years,” said Mohlala.
