More SA honour for swimmer Samantha
The young swimmer is making waves in the pool.
SAMANTHA Labuschagne (17) has been selected to represent South Africa for swimming at the Africa National Champs in Bloemfontein from October 16 to 23 this year.
This is her first senior gala and she’ll be in the company of most of the South African Olympians, like Chad le Clos, Cameron van den Burgh and others who went to Rio.
“To be selected for this gala is one of her dreams fulfilled,” said her father Gerhard. “Patricia and I, and her coach Mandy Koegelenberg are extremely proud of this achievement.”
Mandy explained that Samantha would swim in the freestyle and backstroke sprint races.
Before that though, Samantha and Mandy will travel to Dubai and Doha next week Saturday where Samantha will compete in the World Short Course Champs.
“The idea is to give her some international experience and exposure with an eye on making the 2018 Commonwealth team,” said Mandy.
Samantha has also been nominated for the KZN Junior Sportswoman of the Year award, which will take place at the ICC in Durban tonight (23rd).
When she returns from that she will attempt to get in some studying for her Grade 11 exams.
Thanks were extended to Creston College for the work the staff have put in in ensuring that her academic work is up to date.
On another note, most of these big swim events are self-funded. Anyone looking to provide some form of sponsorship is welcome to contact Gerhard, Patricia or Mandy.
