Ravin’s Auto Centre in Marburg stands as a testament to more than two decades of dedication, perseverance and hard work. Established by Ravin Ranjit, the workshop has flourished over the past 21 years, overcoming challenges and growing steadily.
His vision to create his own automotive workshop was not only achieved but exceeded, thanks to his unwavering drive and a customer-first philosophy. This approach has been central to the company’s exponential growth and continued success.
Since 2013, Ravin’s wife, Mala, has been an integral part of the business, handling administrative responsibilities after a 19-year career in teaching.
She recalls that Ravin’s career in the motor industry began immediately after matriculation, starting at Bates GM in 1989. Initially joining as a ‘spanner boy’, Ravin quickly advanced to an apprentice role, ultimately qualifying as a mechanic. Over his 14 years with Bates GM, from 1989 to 2003, Ravin’s
dedication saw him rise to the position of workshop manager—a role he held until his departure.
In February 2004, Ravin took a leap of faith and opened his own workshop on Lind Road, Marburg. Some five years later, the business relocated to a larger workshop just a few doors away.
In 2017, the company made a major investment by purchasing its own premises. Following extensive renovations and upgrades, Ravin’s Auto Centre officially opened its doors at 9 Brauteseth Road, Marburg, Port Shepstone on June 1, 2019. With the expansion came more advanced equipment and an increased staff complement, growing to 15 team members across the workshop and car wash, including qualified mechanics and apprentices.
Despite facing various challenges over the years, Ravin’s Auto Centre has remained resilient. According to Mala, Ravin’s dedication to his customers has never wavered since the business’s inception.

A brief history: Walter Frey Snr received his Meister-Brief in Stuttgart, Germany, before emigrating to South Africa in 1951.
This is the equivalent of a South African degree as a Master Butcher. He worked as a sausage maker in the Port Shepstone business he later bought. Ramsgate Stationers is the oldest, continuously family-owned and operated bookstore on the South Coast.
It was started by Judy Potts and her late husband Tony in 1984, when the family relocated from Zimbabwe.
The shop first opened in the Ramsgate Mall – hence its name- then moved to the new shopping centre, Hibiscus Mall in Margate.
After more than two decades Ramsgate Stationers which had grown from a small store to an expansive one made the move to spacious premises at the Southcoast Mall in Shelly Beach.

GoldenGlo opened in Port Shepstone in 1983 producing a single variety of candles.

In 1986, a single soap plant began to produce laundry soaps, which then expanded to include beauty soaps.

In 1997, GoldenGlo entered the cooking oil market by establishing a sister company, Sunola Oil Mills (Pty) Ltd.
Under Sunola Oil Mills, a state-of-the-art vegetable oil refinery and an oil packing facility was commissioned in Port Shepstone. The cooking oil products were launched in 1998 and the company has grown from strength to strength.
In 2013, the company set up an oil packing facility in Johannesburg. In 2020, Sunola Oils Mills commissioned an oil refinery in Johannesburg to further cement its footprint in Gauteng and surrounding provinces. Today GoldenGlo and Sunola are regarded as one of the top oil, candle and soap manufacturers in South Africa and its products are used across the country as well as in Swaziland, Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
