Bikers hold Friday 13th event
IN Canada, any 13th day of the month that happens to fall on a Friday is an auspicious occasion for bikers and a reason to get together for a big biking bash.
Now local bikers Brian and Stella McCarthy, who lead a swallow existence, spending the northern summer in Canada and the southern summer on the South Coast, have imported this custom.
They held the first South Coast big biking Friday 13 get together in Margate in May last year and it was a great success. With another Friday the 13th coming up they have decided to help organise another biking festival – and this time round they have invited some Canadian biking friends, Will and Diane Bowman, to join them.
The festival takes place at the Village Tavern in Margate, on Friday, January 13, from 2pm until late. All bikers and motor bike enthusiasts are welcome to come along. There is no entry fee. The celebration will include live music and a resident DJ, stalls and vendors and lots of biking fun.
According to Will and Diane, the Friday 13th biking festivals are huge in Canada, with some 80 000 bikers roaring into the small town of Port Dover, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Erie, every time a Friday 13th comes around. They are both looking forward to a South Coast celebration and the chance to meet local bikers.
Brian and Stella hope that one day their Margate version of the Port Dover one will be just as famous.
