Ward 16 councillor, John Williams, has confirmed that the contract with Jamjo Civils for the R102 rehabilitation project has been cancelled.

“Jamjo Civils should leave the site within a week or two. Negotiations have begun with the new contractor who is expected to be on site within two months. If everything runs to schedule, they will start establishing their site in November and prepare to take over the maintenance of the R102 from Rethman Drive to the Mzimkhulu River bridge,” said Williams.

He added that note should be taken of the builder’s holiday, which starts mid-December. “We cannot expect any major work to start on the R102 until mid-January 2027. Maintenance, in the meantime, from Rethman Drive to the bridge will be undertaken by the KZN Department of Transport (DoT) and/or a sub-contractor until the new contractor is established.”

Meanwhile, the jacking of pillar two on the bridge has been completed, and a single lane remains open to traffic since Monday morning this week.

Restoration of the bridge continues, with the completion date set for September 26.

Further comment was sought from DoT; however, none was received at the time of going to press.
