Dune mining film comes to Ramsgate

THE award-winning documentary, ‘The Shore Break’, which focuses on the controversy surrounding the Wild Coast’s proposed Xolobeni Mineral Sands dune mining project, will be screened at Ramsgate Village Hall (formerly the bowling club) on Friday July 10 at 5.30pm for 6pm.

This is one of two free community screenings that are part of an outreach programme for residents of the South Coast and the Wild Coast. The film will also be screened at Outspan Inn in Port St. Johns on July 11 at 6pm, Seats are limited so email ryley@mvfilms.co.za to book. The film was extremely well received when it was screened in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In fact, because of the demand, an extra screening was organised in Cape Town. ‘The Shore Break’ is expected to attract plenty of attention when it is featured at the Durban International Film Festival. Screenings will take place at the Suncoast Casino on July 18 at 4.30pm, July 21 at 5.45pm and July 24 at 8pm.

The film tells the true story of a bitter struggle that divides a community, the dramatic events playing out against the backdrop of the exquisite Wild Coast. It tells of how an Australian mining company’s effort to win over the local communities of Amadiba pits a local tour-guide against her opportunistic cousin in a vicious battle for the hearts and minds of their rural neighbours.

Through this nuanced drama a parallel story of political intrigue is interwoven – a plot to oust the Pondo royal family. A lilting score by local musician Ntombe Thongo counterpoints the drama. As self-interest clashes with morals and ideals, simple scenarios betray a deeper subtext of subterranean problems, hidden like the contested titanium, biding their time to explode.

Many South Coast people have followed the 10-year Xolobeni saga and are sure to enjoy this film. It is directed and produced by Ryley Grunenwald.
