Full moon festival at world’s smallest desert

DON’T miss the first regular Red Desert Moon Festival on a farm next to Port Edward’s famous Red Desert Nature Reserve, incorporating the world’s smallest desert in the world, on Saturday, May 21.

The festival will feature an unplugged line-up of some of the best music on South Africa’s acoustic circuit. Gates open at 2pm, when there will be guided walks to the Red Desert and the nearby Cascades Waterfall. Music starts at 3pm.

This month’s performers will be phenomenal acoustic guitarist Guy Buttery and Madala Kunene, universally hailed as the ‘King of Zulu Guitar’. There will also be a collaboration between local musician Aden Hinds of Hinds Brothers fame and world renowned musicologist Richard Haslop.

There is something timeless about Madala’s haunting and hypnotic rhythms and his singular take on maskanda, in which he has always evoked the heart and soul of this type of music. Applauded around the world, Madala even performed for Nelson Mandela soon after his release from jail.

When Guy steps into the spotlight expect high dynamics, deep grooves, delicate African inflections and mind-bending guitar playing of an entirely new order.

There will also be a moonlight market offering hand-made and unique crafts and organic foods. Bring your own drinks, blankets and camping chairs.
