Scottburgh in a festive mood
THE inaugural Scottburgh Spring Festival takes place in this popular South Coast seaside town from this Friday, October 9 until Sunday, October 11.
Ugu South Coast Tourism is sponsoring the festival as part of an effort to promote tourism right along the South Coast and it has commissioned GL Events, a fully integrated international eventing company, to manage it. Tourism hopes to make the festival an annual signature South Coast event.
“The festival is an integral part of Ugu South Coast Tourism’s tourism strategy, planned from 2013 to 2017.” said chief executive Justin Mackrory. This strategy included public and private partnerships and the promotion of green principles in tourism, with a specific focus on the enhancement of rural tourism, he added
Spread over three days, the festival events will be held on Scottburgh, Pennington and Rocky Bay beaches,. The programme includes all sorts of beach, land and ocean events, including soccer, volleyball, boat rides, art and graffiti and lifestyle expos. There will also be conservation talks, surfing competitions and lessons, scuba diving lessons, movie nights and many more.
A festival for visitors of all ages, it will incorporate a ‘Top Team’ competition as a main attraction on the Saturday and Sunday. Teams of two to four people will be invited to compete in 12 challenging tasks that will test all sorts of skills.. Different elements carry different points for participation and some of the events are compulsory for teams who wish to be considered for the grand prize.
One of the most popular events will be the charity beach walk from Rocky Bay to Scottburgh beach on the Sunday morning, from 9am. Organised by Clansthal resident, Liane Treherne, this festival happening is a pleasant fun and non-competitive 6.5km walk along the South Coast’s golden coastline. There will be prizes for the first three adults and children home but walkers will be encouraged to relax, take it easy and enjoy the beautiful seascapes.
All proceeds from the walk will go to people who look after abandoned, abused and lost animals. Drinks for the walk will be sponsored by a’Quelle and will be available at the start and halfway mark. Entry is R30. Enter at the start is from 8am.
