Singers celebrate Christmas in July at Margate Retirement Village
KEYBOARD queen Calli Thomson and sassy South Coast saxophonist Vicky de Villiers, who both also sing like angels, invite you to celebrate Christmas in July with them at Azalea Hall, on Saturday July 29, at 6pm for 7pm.
This will be another popular Azalea supper theatre offering, with guests seated around tables, so bring along your picnic hampers of festive fare and liquid refreshments. Calli and Vicky will offer a programme of jazz, pop and instrumental tunes, as well as a few Christmas Carols performed on piano, saxophone and percussion with vocals.
Collectively known as ‘Saxadelic’, a saxophone and piano duo with style and panache, the two musos perform instrumental and vocal tunes for easy listening, ranging from jazz to popular hits from the 1950s until today.
Azalea regulars are sure to recognise them as they have both appeared in concert with the popular jazz group, Platform Jazz, which often performs at this venue.
Calli, originally from Cape Town, graduated from the University of Cape Town, specialising in classical piano and jazz. A multi-talented performer she has made her mark in the entertainment world in everything from cabaret, musicals and children’s theatre to jazz, rock, dance and blues.
In 2005, she settled in Durban with husband, guitarist and singer Barry Thomson and continues her career in musical theatre and making music of all genres. Since moving to Durban she has musically directed and performed in many shows at Gateway Barnyard Theatre, the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre and with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in a tribute to the music of Queen at the Playhouse. She has also has played solo piano at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga, Mount Edgecombe Estate and at the Durban Country Club.
Accomplished sax player and South Coast local, Vicky de Villiers, lends an explosion of sassy sax sound to jazz tunes and popular melodies. Vicky studied Music Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and taught music in Johannesburg before moving back to Durban in 2006. She currently runs a thriving teaching practice in saxophone, clarinet, theory, voice, guitar and percussion on the South Coast. Since 2002 Vicky has performed nationally in many Barnyard Theatre productions throughout the country. She has appeared as soloist with both the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. Vicky plays exclusively on Yamaha saxophones.
