Trio presents an enchanted evening

LOCAL actor, singer and writer Barbie Meyer always has something a little different lined up to brighten the South Coast’s cultural scene. Although best known for her Herman Charles Bosman adaptations, Barbie has, over the years, been involved in all sorts of creative South Coast ventures. She was one of a group of rather zany proponents of the performance arts who treated local audiences to a regular diet of offbeat evenings via a movement called ColaborArt.

For many years she and Heather Bense ran a music club, The Jam, through which they brought a huge variety of South African musicians and bands to the South Coast. Now Barbie is teaming up with another popular South Coast performer, pianist and singer Jonathan Brauteseth, to present what she calls a “spectacularly classy evening” at the beautiful Royston Hall in Umtwentweni.

Jonathan left the South Coast’s sunny shores for Benoni a while back but he has now come back home. The third player in the team is interior decorator Ria Hackland, who owns Royston Hall, an elegant and historically fascinating guest house. She will open it for a night of sparkling entertainment, courtesy Barbie and Jonathan, on Friday, September 2 at 6pm for 6.30pm.

The soiree will include all things fine. There will be piano playing, singing, delicious feasting and wine sampling, as well as a dash of poetry. Jonathan and Barbie make a great partnership . They hosted a similar and highly successful evening in Pretoria where they earned rave reviews. Now they have agreed to do a repeat performance on their home turf.

Barbie and Jonathan will play both haunting and playful duets, selecting music from Evita and by Rod Stewart and everything in between. Barbie has promised to include some of Herman Charles Bosman’s beautiful poetry in the programme. “This is to balance Jonathan’s insistence at reciting some ridiculous limericks between songs,” she laughed.

So don a pair of glamorous heels, slip on a dinner jacket and don’t miss out. Tickets are R280 and this includes the soiree, supper and wine. Book by contacting Barbie at 082 496 3545. Please note booking is essential as space is limited.
