Walkers to go whale spotting

HAVE a whale of a time celebrating the South Coast’s beautiful winter by taking a seaside walk along the famous and fabulously beautiful Ramsgate Ramble beach path.

Ramsgate Conservancy is hosting this walk, the next in the local conservancies’ popular series of Walking in Nature rambles. Members have decided to use the opportunity to show off their lovely beach route.

They ask walkers to meet at the Ramsgate Whale Deck on Sunday, July 19, at 7.30am. From there those taking part will walk to Southbroom via the Ramsgate Ramble pathway then return to the finish, also at the whale deck.

The scenery is gorgeous along this route and walkers will have a good chance of seeing the whales that are currently passing our shores as they movie to their breeding grounds in Mozambique waters.

The good news is that with whaling declared off-limits in the southern oceans, the whale population is increasing every year and more and more of these marine giants are around during winter. Other seasonal visitors that walkers are likely to see include dolphins, gannets and maybe even those elusive sardines.

The walk should take about two hours and is fairly easy. There are plenty of benches along the way if you need to stop and rest and enjoy the view. You don’t even have to do the whole route. A donation of R20 per person will be appreciated to help finance the Ramsgate Conservancy’s many activities. Bacon and egg rolls with tea or coffee will be available at the finish for R30 per person. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
