AFTER years of waiting KwaMasinenge informal settlement residents will finally get proper shelter. The Hibiscus Coast Municipality has confirmed that about 882 housing units are set to be constructed as part of a slum clearance project.
The housing project will be officially launched by the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Ravi Pillay on Friday, September 6.
Some R68- million has been budgeted for the project which is expected to be completed in 30 months.
Gravel roads and stormwater drains will also be upgraded and each housing unit will have a water connection and a water- borne sewerage system.
“The municipality went through the normal supply chain process, where an open tender process was followed in order to secure a suitable contractor to undertake the construction of the houses. Tauris Garden Trading 500 cc was appointed as the preferred bidder,” said HCM municipal manager, Max Mbili.
“During the construction phase, KwaMasinenge residents will benefit in terms of local economic development and work opportunities,” he added.
