New bowling champions crowned

There was some wonderful bowls played last weekend.

SPECTATORS were treated to exciting bowls of a high standard at the KBA Champion of Champions played at The Bell last weekend.

In spite of the windy conditions on Sunday, the semi-finals and finals were exciting events keeping spectators nailed to their seats until the last bowls had been delivered.

Barry Payn of Port Edward beat Chris Forward of Margate BC (21-16) to be crowned the KBA men’s Champion of Champions for 2013. Cyndy McMurtry of Mbango Valley beat Maureen Muller of PSCC (21-14) to be crowned the KBA women’s Champion of Champions for 2013.

In the men’s section, Chris Forward (Margate BC) was runner-up with Dave Hume (Banners Rest) and Chris Faber (Southbroom) in third and fourth place, respectively. In the women’s section, Maureen Muller (PSCC) was runner-up with Marthie Pringle (Margate BC) and Sharon Smith (Uvongo) in third and fourth place, respectively.

The executive of KBA wishes to express its sincere thanks to all the markers, umpires and other officials who assisted in the staging of this great event.

The Masters is the next prestigious event on the KBA calendar to be played on October 5th and 6th. The players who have been invited to participate in the Masters are: Ellen Cawker (Margate BC), Liesje de Rosner (AMBC), Pam Cole-Cook (Margate BC), Esta Wenzel (Margate BC), Ronita Kalil (Margate BC), Jeannie Cousins (AMBC), Heather Roberts (Southbroom), Maureen Muller (PSCC), Johannie Theron (The Bell), Dora Vosloo (Margate CC), Helen Proctor (Margate CC) and Jessica Henderson (Margate BC).

The men are Barry Delvin (PSCC), Chris Forward (Margate BC), Dave Barber (Margate BC), Eddie Fann (PSCC), Ken Tonge (Margate BC), Louw Vermeulen (The Bell), Malcolm Baker (Margate CC), Mark Bischoff (PSCC), Mark Smith (PSCC), Rassie Erasmus (Uvongo), Ron Weddell (Uvongo) and Ross Ferguson (Uvongo).

The technical officials and coaches standing committees of KBA are to hold a combined AGM at Margate Bowling Club in due course. All umpires, markers and coaches are requested to attend.

ARTHUR Seager, Jan Venter and Judy Aiston won the SuperSpar mixed trips played on September 6th. Ollie and Marie Coetzer with Aubrey Gradwell were runners-up and the session went to Miriam Seager, Paul Grutter and Ashley Taute.

The ‘Pirates and Prostitutes’ evening was very well attended although quite a few men tried to earn money as prostitutes and there were a few ‘impersonators’ who had everyone guessing who they were!

Heartfelt thanks to the team of G and T and Gayle Jennings and Cindy Ethrington from Durban for arranging the karaoke action.

Members are reminded that the tabs in for this Friday’s mixed trips competition is 1.45 for 2pm.

NOW that the green has been hollow tined, fertilised and top dressed there will be no play until further notice but members are asked to come along on Fridays from 4.30pm onwards for a friendship gathering.

At the AGM on Friday Hans Wijtman was elected as president, Philip Lotter vice president, Viv Date secretary, Malcolm Milne treasurer, Heather Roberts competition secretary, Neville Holmes green keeper and Mike Gamble committee member.

Do not forget the quiz this Friday. Fish and chips supper will be served at 6pm with the quiz following at 6.30pm.

CONGRATULATIONS to The Bell on winning the women’s trips interclub competition.

Well done to Val Bedecker and Bob MacFarlane who represented the club at the Champion of Champions last weekend.

OLLIE Coetzer and Aubrey Gradwell won the South Coast Herald men’s pairs played on Tuesday, September 3 with a score of 4+18 from runners-up Tony Korb and Dumisani Madlala with 4+13. Steve O’Moore and Duncan Randall won the session prize on 2+10.

Dumisani Madlala and Isobel Kilian won the Harbour View SuperSpar (in house) mixed 2-4-2 on Friday 6th with a score of 4+11 from runners-up Dave Fourie and Hazel Lough with 4+9. Chris Jacobs and Astrid Jackson won the session prize on 2+9.

The next competition will be the Schooners Restaurant (in house) 3-2-1 mixed trips this Saturday, September 14 followed by the Southport/Umtentweni mixed trips fellowship day to be played at Umtentweni Bowling Club on Sunday. Lunch will be a bring and braai with salads and dessert supplied by the host club.

Unfortunately both Janine Roelofse and Chris Jacobs, the club’s reigning singles champs did not fare well in the Champion of Champions competition played last weekend but we are nevertheless very proud of them for carrying the club’s flag high.

CONGRATULATIONS to Sharon Smith on going through to the semi-finals and coming fourth in the Champion of Champions.

Eileen van der Nest was the winner of the 50/50 board but as the winner was not present, the accumulator prize will be carried over to the next social evening on Friday, September 20. Congratulations to the winners of Hair Shoppe vouchers and thank you to the sponsor.

The next sponsored competition will be Airprof Engineering men’s trips on Wednesday, September 18.

Whilst Jenny Rennie and Leoni Booth were not among the winners in the women’s event, the opportunity to take part was much enjoyed.

The Leon de Vos and Josias mixed pairs played on Friday, September 6 was won by Kotie Snyman and Pam Cole-Cook. Runners-up were Hannes du Plessis and Amy Körner and the second session went to Irene Filmer and Ally Weir. The 50/50 board was won by Vi Pells.

The next sponsored competitions are the Webb Restaurant women’s pairs on Thursday, September 12 and the Peg and Punter mixed trips on Thursday, September 19, with thanks to catering by Amorie Schoeler.

THE club was privileged to host a very successful KBA Champion of Champions tournament last weekend and thanks go to the greens staff, caterers, bar, markers, umpires and members who supported the event.

DENZIL Massyn, Barry Herbert and Chris Abram won the Bike Worx men’s trips with 4+12. Athol Robertson, Tys Pringle and Chris Faber were runners-up with 4+10 and the session prize went to Oscar Pienaar, Roy Baker and Danny McArthur. Well done to all. Ann Church (our willing helper) won the 50/50 draw.

The winners of the Something Nice Café women’s fours were Hazel Hosken, Rosemary Esterhuysen, Audrey Faux and Denise Palframan from The Village on 21+14. The runners-up on 19+15 from MCC were Yvonne van Mentz, Barbara Gradwell, Joan Fowler and Jo Olivier. The overall ladder winners for this competition for the season 2012/13 were Marianne van Buuren, Hanna Venter, Mary Warner and Leoni Booth. Congratulations to all and a hearty thanks to all who took part through the year. Jean Marnewick won the 50/50 draw.

Congratulations to Kobie Stander, Dora Vosloo and Helen Proctor for being selected for the KBA women’s seniors and Gae Gravell as their manager. Priscilla van Rooyen has been appointed the women’s open manager.

For beginners and anyone in need of extra tuition, the club’s head coach Yvonne van Mentz is offering coaching at MCC every Tuesday afternoon. Make arrangements by phoning her at 073 6385430.

The winners of the Fruit and Veg drawn mixed trips were Henry Fick, Patrick Kirkbright and Marie Momple on a count out from Denzil Massyn, Dave Dawson and Charlotte van Niekerk. THE South Coast Herald women’s fours was won by Maureen Head, Barbara Fernihough, Rita Dommett and Tina Barbour. Second place went to Yvonne van Mentz, Barbara Iceton, Jean Marnewick and Brenda Smith.

Congratulations to Maureen Muller for securing second place in the Champion of Champions singles held at The Bell last weekend.

Exciting times are ahead for PSCC so it is hoped there will be a full attendance at the AGM today (Thursday, September 12) at 5.30pm.

Chris Forward is congratulated on finishing as runner-up in the KBA men’s Champion of Champions and Marthie Pringle is congratulated on reaching the semi-finals of the women’s event.

Oscar Pienaar and Dave Aitken on 4+24 won the Margate Panelbeater’s men’s 2-4-2 played on Friday. Bob Smith and Dave Barker on 4+24 were runners-up and the sessions went to Mike Jeffrey and Rennie Geyer on 2+14 and Roy Baker and Johnny Louch on 2+11.

The next sponsored competitions are the Fruit and Veg City men’s trips today, Friday, September 13 and Hopden’s Spar women’s 2-4-2 on Friday, September 20. Contact Dave Barber at 083 4503273 and Ellen Cawker at 082 8019339 respectively.

There are still places available for the Doug Watson Memorial Tournament to be played over the weekend of September 28 and 29th. Entry forms are available by contacting 039 3120351.

A ‘bierfest’ will be held at the club on October 12 at 6.30pm for 7pm. There will be free schnapps on arrival, live music and a three course meal for R65 per person. Contact Yvonne at 083 6021712 or Merle at 084 2415305.

Don’t forget the next quiz evening will be held on Thursday, September 25 and bingo has been arranged for Monday, October 7.
