Input needed about Uvongo intersection
The Ward 19 committee invites comments about the Knox Gore and Marine Drive intersection.
THE Ward 19 Committee is hoping to garner public support for the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Knox Gore Road and Marine Drive in St. Michael’s.
Ward committee members point out that this issue has been an ongoing concern for a number of years. Two years ago, Alun Solomon raised the issue on behalf of the residents and owners of the 269 dwellings within the St Michael’s Manor development next to Knox Gore Road.
In a letter to the relevant authorities he pointed out that, in 2004, there had been plans to alter the direction of Knox Gore Road so that it would intersect with Marine Drive directly opposite Orange Rocks Road. The authorities would then install traffic calming facilities. However this had not been done.
His letter also pointed out that many accidents, some of them fatal, had occured there in recent years. Knox Gore was one of the main arteries leading out of Gamalakhe. A number of new developments had been constructed in the vicinity of the intersection, resulting in an increase in population and, therefore, increased traffic volumes, he pointed out. The Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre had also increased traffic flow. All this meant that the intersection was extremely busy, particularly in the mornings and evenings.
If you agree with this assessment and believe that traffic lights are necessary, send your comments to ward committee member Yvonne Booysen at yvonne_booysen@hotmail.com. The committee will pass them on to Hibiscus Coast Municipality.
