Jailbirds raise the bar

A major fund-raising event brought in cash for Cansa.

MARGATE Round Table, in conjunction with the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) held their annual ‘jail and bail’ day at the Shelly Centre last Saturday.

Six ‘inmates’ were imprisoned in a makeshift prison in the main shopping mall, with the intention of separating shoppers from their cash.

The ‘prisoners’ had to phone for pledges, vying to see who could raise the most cash. Shoppers who wandered by were pleaded with to donate cash and many did. Tin cups were rattled against the bars to get attention and once it was obtained, the prisoners went to work to get as much money from them as possible.

By Monday morning this week, initial estimates indicated that in excess of R54 000 had been pledged on the day.

“This has been absolutely amazing,” said James Jones, provincial manager for Cansa.

“The support we received was incredible and I thank all those businesses and individuals who so generously gave up their time to assist us in raising this money. The funds raised will go a long way to help those suffering from cancer,” he said.
