New hope for Masinenge

More than 800 houses will be built.

AFTER 10 years of waiting, 882 Masinenge families will receive proper housing. The Hibiscus Coast Municipality, together with the office of Human Settlements and Public Works, officially launched the Masinenge slum clearance project at KwaMasinenge on Friday last week.

The Masinenge slum clearance project is in line with the provincial government’s efforts to address the problems of informal settlements found in most of the province’s high capacity municipalities.

The anticipated project will see 882 affordable houses, commonly called RDP houses, being built for those who have been inhabiting the Masinenge informal settlement for several years.

The project, worth more than R70-million, has been registered with the National Home Builders’ Registration Council (NHBRC) and construction is expected to take two-and-a-half years.

The slum clearance housing project will also include the upgrading of gravel roads and the water reticulation for the houses. All the houses will have water-borne ablution facilities.

“To date more than three million houses have been built for the poorest of the poor, providing shelter and dignity to more than 16 million people,” MEC Ravi Pillay said.

“Today’s launch of the Masinenge slum clearance housing project is just the beginning of a sustained journey that will see the department of Human Settlements aggressively pursuing the slum clearance and informal settlement upgrade programme with a higher tempo,” he said.
