Circumcision campaign under way

It takes place at the hospital this Saturday.

THE Port Shepstone Regional Hospital will hold a male medical circumcision (MMC) campaign at the hospital outpatient department this Saturday, September 21 at 7.30am. All men aged 14 years and older are encouraged to attend.

Hospital spokesman Phumza Morai assured that all necessary preventative measures will be followed to ensure the safety of men undergoing the procedure. “It will be performed by qualified doctors and nurses who are specially trained to perform this kind of procedure,” she said.

MMC is the best option for sexual and reproductive health. It offers a lifetime of benefits including better hygiene, reduced risk of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/Aids. It also reduces the risk of penile cancer and the partner’s risk of cervical cancer.

Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 years are advised to come with their parents/guardians to sign a consent form for the procedure to be done.

Consent forms can also be obtained from local clinics. These can be taken home for parents and guardians to complete and sign.
