OWNERS of a bed and breakfast establishment in Southbroom have been singled out for international recognition.
Jonathan and Liz Shaw were thrilled to learn their Sunbirds Bed and Breakfast had been awarded a Venere.com Top Overall Rating for 2013
Venera.com is one of the biggest online travel agencies in the world and the award is determined by users’ feedback alone. Out of 135 000 establishments all over the world that are eligible, only 5 000 have received Top Overall Ratings.
This is not the only accolade Sunbirds has received. Trip Advisor, a web site that gives guests the opportunity of reviewing establishments where they have stayed, has ranked it in the top five of more than 800 KwaZulu-Natal bed and breakfasts and inns.
Jonathan and Liz bought Sunbirds after moving to South Africa from the United Kingdom, nine years ago. The spent the first year renovating their house then opened its doors for business. According to Jonathan, they both have service industry backgrounds and love meeting and working with people, so are well suited to running a B&B.
is one of Sunbirds’s many attractions. It is a perfect holiday destination for golfers from all over the world who want to try out the internationally renowned Southbroom Golf Club.
While guests often comment about the warm hospitality and home-from-home atmosphere they enjoy at Sunbirds, there is yet another reason for the repeat bookings Jonathan and Liz regularly receive. Guests just love the special and varied breakfasts that Liz and Jonathan serve them.
“Our breakfasts are different and they often seem to be a highlight for our guests. Liz and I pride ourselves on making the most of a fabulous location. We are absolutely hands-on and pay great attention to detail,” Jonathan said.
“It is very gratifying that our Greater South Coast product owners are receiving deserved recognition for their hospitality offerings,” said Ugu South Coast Tourism chief executive Justin Mackrory. He congratulated Liz and Jonathan.
According to Liz and Jonathan, there are two reasons why they named their B &B ‘Sunbirds’. It is a play on words to describe many of their guests who, like migratory birds, escape the European winters to follow the summer sun to Southbroom. The name also comes from the little sunbirds that fill their garden with flashes of colour.
For many guests a highlight of the day is to enjoy a delicious breakfast while watching the pretty sunbirds.
