Big swell expected to hit coast

The big seas pose no danger to those living along the coastline.

SHARK safety gear has been removed from some of the beaches on the South Coast due to a massive cyclone swell predicted to hit KwaZulu-Natal this weekend. The swell is expected to reach 3.2 metres.

According to www.wavescape.co.za, the tropical storm is developing in the northern parts of the Mozambique channel, building rapidly and peaking tomorrow (Friday) and lasting through the weekend.

The website said that the cyclone is expected to head south towards an area east of Durban during the early hours of Friday morning.

Mike Anderson-Reed, head of operations at the KwaZulu-Natal Shark’s Board, who regularly monitors the weather sites, stressed that the cyclone was only bringing sea swell, with no wind and rain expected. He emphasised that that the swell posed no threat for those living along the coast.

He pointed out that the shark safety gear had only been removed from certain beaches as a basic preventive measure to prevent the possibility of the equipment being damaged, lost or washing ashore.

Shark safety nets have not been removed from Hibberdene, Umtentweni, Margate main beach, Ramsgate main beach, San Lameer and Port Edward .
