‘Road agency clarifies mystery holes on R61’
Please be advised that the letter from the reader did not prompt the road investigation.

DEAR Editor,-
We refer to a letter from one of your readers that appeared in the SCH on December 12, referring to ‘rectangular holes all along the R61’.
Please be advised that the letter from the reader did not prompt the road investigation, therefore, I would like to request that the headline be amended soonest. The R61 investigations were already in progress to determine load-bearing capacity of the road.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has a mandate to finance, improve, manage and maintain the country’s national road network.
Detailed design and materials investigations are currently being conducted by SANRAL to determine the bearing capacity of the section of road in question, and therefore the need, by a commercial laboratory appointed for the investigation, to excavate test pits on the existing pavement.
Some of the test pits which were temporarily back-filled will now be permanently back-filled. SANRAL will be liaising closely with the service provider to ensure that the road is permanently back-filled.
