OPINION: ‘Steak knife fine is ludicrous’

The policewoman told him that it was a dangerous weapon and fined him R300.

DEAR Editor,-

Last Wednesday, my son was on his way back to the South Coast from Pretoria. He is a truck driver and was pulled off at a roadblock by a woman police officer. When he got out of the truck, the woman noticed a steak knife that he keeps on the inside of the door.

She asked what he used the knife for and when my son told her it was for his meals, she told him that it was a dangerous weapon and fined him R300. I inquired at the Port Shepstone Police Station and they said that since there is no such thing, I should take the fine to the police station closest to where he received the fine.

I told them that there are thousands of people, including police, who take their lunch to work with a knife and fork. Can’t the police find better things to do with their time?

INCREDULOUS
