Councillor denies hiding in car boot
Msibi supporters apparently became quite aggressive and management of the lodge, where the meeting was being held, called the police.
UGU councillor Layidliva Mbuthuma is said to have hidden in the boot of his car to escape an angry NFP mob which stormed a meeting in Vryheid recently.
Mr Mbuthuma has since denied this, but others who were at the meeting told the Herald that he had done so.
Mr Mbuthuma, who is also a member of the national working committee in the National Freedom Party, apparently suspected there could be drama at the meeting and was escorted by three bodyguards.
Many believed he was the leader of the group which wanted Zanele KaMagwaza Msibi to be removed from her position as party leader.
Msibi supporters apparently became quite aggressive and management of the lodge, where the meeting was being held, called the police.
Manager of the lodge, Marius Joubert, confirmed the ruckus and said the front door and the gate were damaged.
Asked to comment, Mr Mbuthuma said: “What was I to do? A group of angry people forced their way into a meeting, shouting my name. I had to protect myself.”
However, he denied hiding in the boot. “I was escorted by the police and my bodyguards ” he said.
Vryheid police declined to comment.
