‘Big Brother’ spies on crime again

The municipality has promised to have the CCTV cameras up and running shortly.

CCTV cameras will soon be able to zoom in on criminals again in the Port Shepstone CBD and Margate.

Responding to community concerns after the Herald warned that many cameras weren’t working, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality has now assured they intend to take security seriously.

HCM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu: “The reality is that CCTV cameras were installed in the Port Shepstone CBD 14 years ago. Therefore, the technology is old and cameras have had to be repaired continually since 2007.”

The problem was exacerbated by copper cable theft at the Port Shepstone taxi rank.

The municipality appointed Allway Technology Systems in October last year to install new monitors and cameras.

They were shocked to discover that all fibre cables were cut during a road paving exercise in Port Shepstone CBD, said Cllr Mqwebu.

She confirmed the Herald report that cameras in Ryder Street and Nelson Mandela Drive were not working, but said they would up and rolling again shortly.

“It is important to mention that at this moment all cameras are now functioning in Port Shepstone CBD. Margate CCTV cameras are being attended to as well,” she said.

She assured the public that Law Enforcement Officers would be deployed in the interim, especially to patrol high risk areas.
