JUST IN: Man (49) appears in Port Shepstone court for R200m drug heist
More than 500kg of cocaine worth an estimated R200m was stolen from a Hawks storage facility in 2021, with the case now back in court.

Lucas Legabe (49) made a first appearance in the Port Shepstone Magistrates ‘ Court earlier today (August 18) in relation to the Hawks Port Shepstone drug consignment that was stolen.
Over 500 kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated R200 million, was stolen from the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime storage facility in Port Shepstone in late 2021.
The major heist has resurfaced as a primary focus of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating police infiltration by criminal syndicates.
Legabe’s appearance comes after an intense investigation by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation based in Pretoria which resulted in him being arrested on August 7.
Subsequent to his arrest, he was charged and appeared in transit to KwaZulu-Natal in Germiston on August 11 where he was remanded in custody.
Legabe’s case was postponed to September 8 and 9 for a formal bail application.
Investigations are ongoing, with police continuing to pursue all those involved.
Further arrests have not been ruled out.
