HCM protest was ‘illegal’

The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience caused by last week's protest.

UNHAPPY Hibiscus Coast Municipality workers downed tools and took their grievances to the streets last Thursday.

Port Shepstone CBD was left with litter scattered around as there was no one to clean up.

HCM spokesman Simon April told the media that the strike was illegal and has apologised to ratepayers who were inconvenienced.

Work came to a standstill when angry Hibiscus Coast Municipality workers staged a protest.

“We apologise unequivocally, but we were disturbed just as much as anyone else,” he said.

“The South African Municipal Workers’ Union suddenly downed tools without warning and meetings between all relevant parties had to be convened quickly,” said Mr April. “Rubbish was left piled up for two day.”

“The management of the municipality will deal swiftly with the issue and minimise chances of it happening again in the future,” he added.
