Would-be hijacker left feeling a little ‘bummed’

Police recovered an unlicensed firearm from the wounded man.

A HITCHHIKER was shot in the buttocks when he and an accomplice allegedly tried to hijack a man who gave them a lift last Saturday.

The motorist (42) was on his way to the South Coast when he was thumbed down by two men at Isipingo, said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“When man stopped the vehicle to let them out at Umzumbe, it appears there was a quarrel over money. One of the hitchhikers took out a firearm and tried to shoot the motorist.”

The driver then took out his own firearm and fired a shot which hit one of the men in the buttocks. The other fled.

The motorist reported the incident at Port Shepstone SAPS and police rushed to the scene.

Police found the wounded man and the unlicensed firearm at the scene. He was taken to hospital and the gun will be sent for ballistics testing.

Investigations are continuing. The wounded man is still recovering in hospital.
