Dramatic arrest of court escapee

He sustained dog bites to his hand and leg during his arrest.

DREAMS of freedom were short-lived for Mduduzi Blessing Zama when the police net closed around him at yesterday (Thursday) at midday and he was re-arrested.

On 11 August, Zama was at the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court facing several charges of housebreaking when he allegedly misrepresented himself as another accused who had paid a fine for a drug related offence and was released.

He now faces a further charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Shortly before midday yesterday, vigilant members of the Scottburgh SAPS community policing forum in Amandawe, saw Zama at a certain address in Ward 4, Amandawe.

They immediately alerted the Scottburgh cluster detective task team as well as the Scottburgh crime prevention unit.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker said that the members immediately galvanised into action and, accompanied by colleagues from the Port Shepstone tactical response team, Scottburgh SAPS, the Umzinto K9 unit and members of the CPF, they formed a human cordon around the premises.

“It is alleged that Zama caught sight of them and attempted to make a break for it but he underestimated the prowess of fleet-footed K9 unit members and patrol dogs,” he said.

Within moments, they had him pinned to the ground despite him fighting back and struggling to break free and escape.

Zama was promptly placed under arrest.
