A MAN, believed to have been the victim of carjackers, was attacked in Oslo Beach yesterday.

The 60-year-old was severely assaulted with a panga and his vehicle was stolen.

He was found by a man looking for scrap metal who then flagged down police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid and her husband, Warrant Officer Marc Wiid, who were passing at the time.

“We were shown the seriously injured man lying on a pathway. He had terrible gaping wounds on his face and head. He also had a large open wound on one leg,” she said.

Lt-Col Wiid called for police backup and paramedics. Warrant Officer Ettienne Grantham and Reservist Constable Nick Watruss together with officers from the K9 Unit from Port Shepstone SAPS, searched the area for possible suspects.

The man was taken to hospital.

During investigations police established that the victim was with another person in a cul-de-sac when he was approached by two men.

“The attackers wanted to steal his Nissan bakkie, but he resisted and was attacked. The hijackers fled, taking his NPS registered vehicle.  Police are following up on leads,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
