Suspected hijacker shot

The man in the vehicle was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.

SCOTTBURGH SAPS has registered an inquest docket after the death of an alleged hijacker.

Some time between 8pm and 9pm last Saturday night, a 47-year-old security official was hijacked in the Scottburgh Mall parking area.

Two suspects robbed him at gunpoint of his security company bakkie, his money and cellphone.

The victim was forced to lie down in the back of the bakkie and was cuffed with his own handcuffs. He was driven to the Amandawe sports ground where the suspects used sticky tape to bind his legs together at the knees and ankles. His mouth was also taped shut and he was left inside the toilets. He later managed to free himself and sought help.

Scottburgh SAPS and the Umzinto K9 unit searched for the hijacked bakkie. Police later received a report of a shooting on the R102 Old Main Road, Park Rynie.

Upon their arrival  they found the bakkie, which had visible bullet holes. The man in the vehicle was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. He was attended to by paramedics  before being taken by ambulance to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh, where he later died.

It was subsequently established that the dead man was Siboniso Bernedictus Gumbi (35), also known as Lezi, of Amandawe.

The hijacking is being investigated by detectives from the Port Shepstone Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) while the inquest is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Salomie Pillay of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service.
