Criminals target shopping centre

ATM users have also been targeted.

ORIBI Plaza seems to be the latest stomping ground for thieves, with a car being stolen and several people robbed at ATM machines in recent weeks.

Police have called for shoppers to be extra vigilant at any centre, even if there are car guards in attendance.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid urged people not to take it for granted that their car was locked when they walked away. Thieves, she said, used ‘jammers‘ which interfered with the locking system.

“Also, do not leave valuables in plain sight,” she added.

The elderly woman from Marburg who lost her car on Thursday last week said she was devastated.

“I thought my car was safe because I definitely locked it and car guards were in the area,” she said.
