Cop jailed for murdering husband, mother-in-law
The mother and son were shot dead at their home in September 2014.
BALUNGILE Madlala, a Port Shepstone SAPS police constable who was found guilty of the murder of her husband, Thulebone Madlala (39), and her mother-in-law, Bellina Madlala (77), was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Ramsgate High Court recently.
Balungile will have to serve eight years before being eligible to apply for parole. As reported previously, Balungile was accused of three murders, including that of her neighbour, Thokozile Shabane. She was found not guilty of the latter.
The judge took into consideration the circumstances that led to the murders at their home in Mbotsha Ward, Bhobhoyi on September 7, 2014, and reduced the initial sentence from 23 years. Last Thursday the court room was filled with both families’ members.
Balungile, a mother of two children, handed herself over to police after the fatal shooting.
The Madlala family told the Herald that they felt that the sentence was not long enough.
