SIYAMISO Bebu (31) was shot in the neck during a card game at the Masinenge informal settlement, near Margate last Friday.
Mr Bebu was playing cards with friends when he heard a gunshot. According to police reports, he smelled smoke and after a few seconds felt a sharp pain on his right side of his neck.
When he placed his hand on his neck, he noticed he was bleeding and realised that he had been shot. He also noticed a man hiding a firearm.
Community members contacted paramedics and Mr Bebu was taken to the Gamalakhe Clinic for treatment.
On Monday, Margate detectives received vital information regarding the shooting.
“When police arrived at Masinenge, they saw the man allegedly responsible for the shooting,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
“When the suspect noticed the police, he tried to make a getaway but was arrested. A 9mm firearm and two rounds of ammunition were recovered,” added Capt Mfeka.
The 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The detectives responsible for the arrest include Warrant Officer Musa Mboyisa, Sergeant Bonginkosi Mbhele, Constable Xolani Nqoko, Cst Siphiwosenkosi Hlongwane and Cst Ndumiso Nzimakwe.
During the investigations it came to light that Paddock detectives were also looking for the man who is wanted on murder charges.
The suspect is due to appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s court today.
Mr Bebu is recovering in hospital.
