A MAN who followed a woman into sugarcane fields and then raped her was handed a term of life imprisonment.
He was sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court on Monday this week after being found guilty.
The woman, who is mentally challenged, was at a centre in Shelly Beach when Velani Nyawose (unknown to her) ‘proposed love’ to her.
She told him that she did not believe in love. He then persuaded her to go with him to his house.
They traveled to Port Shepstone and then to Hibberdene where he lived.
En route to the house he saw his mother in a field and told the woman that they should use an alternate path.
The woman told him that she wanted to go home and walked away. Nyawose then followed her into the sugarcane field where he raped her.
Some women from the area found the woman crying at a bus stop and assisted her in reporting the matter to the police.
Nyawose pleaded not guilty and maintained that the woman had consented to intercourse.
However, the court dismissed his claims and he was convicted as charged.
The matter was finalised by regional court prosecutor, Sibusiso Mhlongo.
The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence.
