Rapist sentenced to life behind bars

The mentally challenged teenager was raped twice.

AN MSINSINI man has been handed a life sentence for raping a 15-year-old mentally challenged girl in 2014.

On January 10, 2014, Velani Nyawose (39) lured the mentally challenged teenager into the bushes at Msinsini, where he raped her.

He then took her by taxi to Shelly Beach. When they alighted from the taxi, he assaulted her and raped her again. He later abandoned her, and a concerned member of the public came to her assistance.

“Criminals, especially rapists, seek out women and children, the elderly and mentally impaired as they are often easier targets,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She cautioned women to take precautions at home, when on the street and even when out on a date.
