Teen arrested for having unlicensed firearm

The tip-off came from the community.

A TEENAGER was placed under arrest by Margate police  in Mvutshini, near Margate last Sunday.

Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka said police were patrolling in the area when they received information about an 18-year-old who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. “When police arrived, they found that the suspect had had already been disarmed by members of the community,” said Capt Mfeka.

The firearm and one magazine with ammunition were recovered.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition.

He appeared in Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Tuesday). The case was postponed for further investigation.

The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of a crime.

“We thank the community members who provided this valuable information to the police,” said Capt Mfeka.
