Harding mayor accused of theft, assault

Police have confirmed that assault charges were laid.

TAPS in Harding ran dry for days recently because, residents say, the mayor ‘stole’ an Ugu pump.

Community knives are also out for Mayor Dixie Nciki because of two pending cases of assault, allegedly committed by her prior to the recent elections.

According to a source close to the mayor, during branch general meetings held prior to elections, the mayor allegedly assaulted an elderly woman (66) and another man, who was found dead in an open field a day before he could appear in court to present his case.

“Some people don’t like her. They claim she is rude to community members, but she is still the mayor and people should respect her,” said the source.

Margate SAPS spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the two cases of assault. He said there was only one case currently in court.

Now irate community members are calling for the mayor’s head.

However, Ugu has been quick to deny that they are missing any equipment and claim the allegations of theft by the mayor are ‘totally unfounded’.

Disgruntled citizens of Umuziwabantu Municipality flooded the Herald with calls this week, demanding to know why Councillor Nciki was still mayor.

This after a councillor within the municipality raised these allegations at a community meeting held recently in the area.

Ugu spokesman France Zama emphatically denied that there was any theft of any equipment from their operations.

“Harding town does, on occasion, experience water challenges. These are solely attributed to technical issues, communicated to all stakeholders through the ward councillor.”

Councillor Nciki told the Herald it was the ANC who deployed her as mayor.

“Whoever has a problem with me should contact the ANC,” she said.

On the theft allegations, she said only Ugu could comment.

“I am not Ugu. Only Ugu is at liberty to comment about that.”

ANC spokesman Sipho Dlamalala told the Herald’s sister paper, Ugu Eyethu, that the municipality is known to have internal squabbles.

“During election internal processes, we were not made aware of such allegations against Councillor Nciki. Hence we did not see reasons for not electing her as mayor.”
