Many hands make sick child’s dream come true

So touching was the experience that tears ran down the faces of even the most hardened paramedics.

NETCARE 911 paramedics in KZN were recently thrilled to be able to play a major role in making the dream of a terminally ill child a reality.

Seven-year-old Mohamed has cancer and the Little Fighters Cancer Trust, with the assistance of sponsors, brought the child and his parents to Durban to see the dolphins.

However, when the family arrived in Durban,  Mohamed’s condition deteriorated to such an extent that he had to be admitted to the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital.

His father approached  hospital manager Mark van Heerden and asked for help in fulfilling his son’s dream.

Discussions between Netcare 911, Umhlanga Hospital and uShaka Marine World resulted in arrangements being made to take Mahomed, in an ambulance under the constant care of an Advanced Life Support paramedic, to interact with the dolphins.

This was a very emotional experience as stands full of people witnessed the child being carried  to the side of the pool by medics.

To the sounds of  “One Moment in Time”,  the handler slowly brought the massive dolphin towards the child.  The boy was able to touch and feed the dolphin, and the expression on his face will be remain forever in the memory of all who were there. So touching was the experience that tears ran down the faces of even the most hardened paramedics.

After this life-changing experience,  paramedics drove the child back to the hospital where he rested for a while before being flown to a Port Elizabeth hospital by the Netcare jet, manned by a crew of paramedics.
