POLICE have called on everyone, but especially women, to be extra vigilant when at home at night.
This comes after three elderly women recently became victims of violent crimes in three separate incidents.
In one of the attacks a 66-year-old woman was hit on the head with a hammer last Wednesday. The woman, who was on holiday from Gauteng, was with three friends at a home in Palm Beach.
“When the woman went inside to fetch something, she saw a shadow moving in the garden,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
The woman then called her friends to come inside and closed the gate but did not lock it as she did not have the keys.
Suddenly a man approached, pushed open the gate and pointed a firearm at her. He also had a hammer and attacked her, hitting her on her head. The assailant fled taking the women’s jewellery.
In another attack a 62-year-old woman was woken up at her house in Madlala location in Southport last Thursday at about 11pm.
“While she was lying in bed someone shone a light in her face,” said Lt-Col Wiid. When she asked who it was, there was no reply. The intruder then covered her face and removed her underwear before raping her. Before fleeing, He grabbed a pouch containing cash and bank cards from around her neck and fled.
Last Wednesday at about 11pm, a 76-year-old woman was in her lounge in Howard Avenue, Trafalgar when she was attacked.
The woman had apparently left the door slightly open for the dog.
Three men entered the house and demanded firearms and money.
They threatened her with a knife and dragged her around the house. She managed to press the panic button, which resulted in the suspects fleeing, taking with them a cellphone and dvd player.
“Be very vigilant when at home, especially after dark. Ensure there is enough lighting around the house and that doors and safety gates are locked at all times,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
