Port Shepstone pool player preps for world champs
Sharik Naidoo will represent South Africa at an international competition in Cape Town.
Sharik Naidoo of Port Shepstone has been selected to represent South Africa at the U23 International Blackball Federation IBF World Championships in Velodrome Bellville, Cape Town, from October 23 to November 1.
The achievement is a testament to his commitment to the sport. Sharik is the U23 KZN captain and two-time U23 Protea player.
“I am proud and honoured to have been selected to represent my country. My biggest inspiration is my dad, Ivan. He’s not only the South African Masters champion, but also my coach. It’s because of him that I am where I am today. So, I will always look up to him.”
Sharik added that to play pool, one’s mind has to be clear at all times. “If you think about something else or if something is on your mind, then you won’t be able to concentrate, and your game won’t be at that level you want it to be. Listening to music before a game helps clear my mind and focus,” he said.
His future goals are to get the youth on the South Coast to achieve what he has. “ Hard work and focus help you reach big goals. Most skills grow stronger when you practice every day. I want our youth to excel in pool. After my first year playing for South Africa, I decided to open a venue with pool tables for children to reach greater heights in the game.”
