A BUSINESSMAN was lucky to have had his vehicle returned to him after he was hijacked in Marburg last Saturday.
The man was held up in Pioneer Road at about 6.30pm by armed men who then drove off in his vehicle.
A carjacking case was opened at Port Shepstone police station.
At about 9pm, Lazer 911 security operations manager, Krinesh Naicker responded to an alarm which had been activated in Wimpy Crescent.
While checking on the property he heard voices in nearby Buckingham Road and went to investigate.
“I noticed six people trying to move a bakkie which had gone off the road. On checking the registration of the vehicle I realised it was the one that had been hijacked a few hours earlier. I calmly spoke to the men and offered to help have them towed out,” said Mr Naicker.
However, when Mr Naicker returned to his vehicle he called for back-up from SAPS and fellow Lazer 911 officers before parking his response vehicle in front of the bakkie.
When the back-up arrived, five men were arrested and the bakkie seized. The driver of the bakkie fled.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the suspects were released as they claim that the driver of the vehicle asked them to help him to push the vehicle as it had stalled.
“Statements were obtained and police are now searching for the driver who apparently hijacked the vehicle,” she said.
Investigations continue.
