Update: Councillor assassinated in bed

His wife and children were in the dining room.

RAY Nkonyeni Municipality and the Lower South Coast ANC are mourning the death of a comrade who was killed while asleep in bed at his home in Margate Extension 3 last Thursday night.

His wife and children were in the dining room at the time and were alerted by a single shot.

News of Thembinkosi ‘Commando’ Zoleka’s murder has already featured prominently on social media.

This is the latest of several murders of politicians in the district in recent months and has fuelled speculation that there is a political ‘hit squad’ in action.

The provincial government has already called for a special investigation.

Mr Zoleka had served less than three months as Proportional Representation councillor (PR) and Executive Committee (Exco) member of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal party spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli said:

“The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is shocked and saddened by the brutal murder of one of its activists.

“Details regarding his murder are sketchy, but he was shot in his sleep after the assassin gained entrance to the house through the window.

“He was killed while his wife and children were in the dining room and the assailant used the same window to escape‚” Mr Ntuli said.

Police spokesman Nqobile Gwala said the motive for his murder was unknown and no suspects had been apprehended.
