A MOTHER who wondered why her son was having difficulty walking was shocked to find that he had been raped.
The mother had left her five-year-old son in the care of her brother at his home in KwaCele, inland from Scottburgh, while she went out to visit her boyfriend.
She examined her son on November 6, and concluded that he had, indeed, been raped.
“A case of rape was registered for investigation,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum, adding that: “Constable Sifiso Mbhele of the Scottburgh SAPS arrested the 39-year-old suspect and detained him.”
The alleged rapist appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on November 9.
The case was postponed to November 17 for a bail application hearing. Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service’s Detective Sergeant Njabulo Latha is investigating the case.
Expressing his concern, acting Ugu Cluster Commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya, said: “Family and relatives who should be caring for the children in their families are often the ones abusing them. Children are vulnerable and can easily be taken advantage of. It is our duty as parents and guardians to ensure their safety and well-being.”
