A 39-year-old man operating a fast food outlet in the Umzinto CBD was robbed while preparing to close up for the day.
Five armed men held up the man and demanded money.
“They robbed him of a large sum of cash before fleeing on foot and randomly firing shots. Fortunately, nobody was hurt,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
Following up on information received, police arrested a 20-year-old suspect at the Sanathan Informal Settlement in Umzinto.
A pistol loaded with three rounds of ammunition was recovered.
It was subsequently established that the pistol recovered had been reported stolen during a burglary at a residence in Umbelibeli, Umzinto, in October.
The pistol will be subjected to ballistic test to determine if it had been used in the commission of any offence, said Captain Pandarum.
The accused appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, November 8, on two counts of housebreaking, six counts of robbery as well as the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The case has been remanded until November 17 for bail application hearing.
