MOTORISTS are warned to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles with occupants who  pose as police officials and then force them to stop.

Some people appear to be using an illegal blue light which is sometimes fitted to the dashboard of the car.

“This light is then used to fool motorists into stopping, allowing the criminals to hijack or rob them,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“If you suspect that this is the case, rather proceed to the nearest public place where there are other people and it is safe. If it is indeed a police vehicle, officers will follow and question you there,” she said.

The police have emphasised that it is illegal for any citizen who does not have the necessary authority (such as the SAPS) to have their vehicles fitted with blue lights and use them for their own purposes.

The same applies to red and amber lights.

The SAPS and Law Enforcement as well as the Road Road Traffic Inspectorate will be on the look out for these vehicles and the owners and drivers will be charged accordingly.

“We will not tolerate criminals who are posing as SAPS officers or other emergency services and then commit crime,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Anyone who witnesses such suspicious behaviour must report it to the nearest police station or call 10111. It is also advisable to get a good description and the registration number of the said vehicle(s) so that the police can trace the vehicle and the occupants as quickly as possible.
