WATCH: Dog confined to prison hell
For months the dog was forced to live in a cage filled with its own faeces.

WOULD you treat your child like this?
This is the question field officer Sabelo Ngcobo of the Lower South Coast SPCA asked the owner of a dog who had confined his pet to a small wire enclosure in Marburg.
He was horrified to find the dog living on a filthy, two-by-three-metre concrete slab, in a neighbourhood in Marburg this week.
Officer Ngcobo, together with his colleague, Liesl Bolton, went to inspect the property, only to discover the animal had been living for months in unhygienic, stinking living conditions.
Officer Ngcobo said the animal’s faeces appeared to have not been picked up for months.
“With no space to exercise and very little human contact, the dog had become incredibly timid and even a little aggressive,” he said. Desperate to escape its prison of hell, the dog had even attempted to chew through the side of the enclosure.
Officer Ngcobo gave the family a warning to clean the enclosure within 24 hours and to let the dog roam freely around the large property.

The following day, he returned to find the enclosure had been spotlessly cleaned. “We agreed that the door of the enclosure be left open so the puppy could have access in and out of his kennel,” he said.
Officer Ngcobo confirmed that he would monitor the situation.
Michael Muller, manager of the SPCA, asked the community to be the eyes and ears for animals who don’t have a voice.

“Although the owner of the dog has paid heed to the officer’s warning, this was only a reactive response. It’s disturbing to think this animal has lived in these appalling conditions for such a long time,” he said.
The SPCA is appealing to the public for blankets for their dog and cat kennels and plastic dog beds. Contact: 039 3120962 or 039 3173362.
